Today finally opened a business account. In the UK it’s not as easy as it is in Latvia. Banks must ask their new clients about the business, the origin of the income, product that would be sold, product price and even specialization! Everything is kept in the bank’s database. There are not so many banks that offer business accounts. I know for sure that business accounts could be opened at LLoyds TSB, Barclays, HSBC, Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank (actually they are changing name to Santander), NatWest and several not so popular banks. At Barclays things are complicated even for personal current accounts. Lloyds is much simpler.
Actually I am a little bit confused that credit/debit cards are sent to your home address. Pin codes as well. Internet banking is protected only with your password – no additional code cards or code calculators that we use in Latvia.
And a little trick to have proof of address for the bank (they say contract with landlord is not ok) – you open personal current account with debit card (for personal account contract with landlord is ok). They’ll send it to your address and you have proof of address i.e. letter from the bank is proof of address itself.
Made an appointment today for interview about obtaining NIN – they planned it only for 23rd of August. Damn, some things work here very slowly… Good that I need that NIN to apply for VAT registration and pay myself salary from my own company when sales will start – but that definitely can wait a bit. I’ll give very short advice – call Jobcenter on very the first day when you arrive. It would save you some time. I am already one week here and could have called already. In my case it’s not very essential to get it as fast as possible but in any case – it’s better when things are done earlier than later.
Than had a walk from Finchey road to Regent’s Park and then Westminster, Southwerk, Tower bridge, City and back… Navi shows a bit over 20km
Well, as company registration is in progress I went to banks to ask what documents do I need to open both – business account and personal account. First I went to Barclays. I’ve attended two Barclay’s branches and it might be funny but they said they need totally different documents for opening accounts but the common thing was – it’s won’t be easy. I must say that personal account it’s possible to open more or less easily but business it’s very hard to open at Barclays and they do it in about THREE WEEKS time. They must be joking! They said that they must check client and must be sure the client will not scam them. That’s crazy as I am not asking for credit and overdrafts… Than went to Lloyds TSB to the branch at 185 Baker street (Yeah, the one that was in the Bank job). And wow – what is needed is ID/passport + proof of address for personal account and ID + company registration for the business account. That’s how things should work. I totally don’t get why Barclays makes things too complicated.
btw interesting fact – to apply for VAT, I need myself to have NIN. At least accountants said so. According to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/start/register/ company should register for VAT if turnover for last 12 months is over 70k GBP. Well if company if owned by overseas owner? In this case as I understood he must come to the UK and apply for NIN first. A little bit crazy but still procedure is much easier than it’s in Latvia.
Not a secret that purpose of my current trip to London is opening of small company for internet based product. Using a Latvian company was bad idea as overseas a lot of people will be confuses about trust to such company. However UK companies are famous for their trust worldwide, easy running procedures and costs and easy registration.
As I discovered to set up company in the UK is very easy. There is some kind of joke that in the UK even a dog can set up a company. I didn’t want to do it myself so turned to third-party company that offers also accounting and bookkeeping. Company registration and legal address in London for a year costs a little bit over 80 pounds. Just to company – in Latvia legal address service costed me 290Lats (that’s about $540). Well registration should be finished with some 2 days… Actually UK company could be registered within a day.
23/07/2010 11:15, Landed in Stansted. They call it London, but well Stansted is 60km away from London. Hertz instead of Vauxhall corsa gave Fiat 500c that was actually nice replacement. 500c model is convertible (see photo). Car itself is nice – 1.4cc engine with sport button that makes car more aggressive on acceleration and handling. So I carefully started my way to the guest-house I’ve booked room in. It appeared it’s in Wembley. Can’t say it’s the best area but overall it’s ok. At least I’ve seen Wembley Arena (see photos).
